I had my 454 rebuilt last year with a Lunati hydraulic roller cam with .545 lift. New valves and guides (iron heads). I reused an old set of aluminum Crane roller rockers that have seen very little use, but they're about 16 years old. Problem, is the engine sounds tappy, even with 1.5 turns preload on them. I've tried 20/50 oil and 10/40 but no discernable difference. I would like to try some new rockers to see if I can quiet this motor down. Is there an advantage of stainless over aluminum ? I see sets can range from $350-$1,000. Willing to pay $ to rid the sewing machine sounds.
Incidently, I've seen tons of threads about noisy rockers on various sites, but almost all of them are 10-15 years old - hardly a word about this in later years. Maybe newer rollers are quieter these days....or everyone has poorer hearing? Appreciate any experience here.

I can understand your desire to get rid of the noise. Dumb question maybe, but are you sure the noise is coming from the rockers and not somewhere else in the valve train? A stethoscope might help if you're not sure. Do all the rockers sound the same? Stainless rockers are much heavier/denser of course, and that alone would absorb some of the noise/vibration better than aluminum but maybe not enough.

A bad fuel pump will make the same sound and make you chase the valve noise all day, don't ask me how I know.

yes that advise to carefully the source of the noise is very valid. rockers with a 1.5 turn preload should
be too tight to make a sound UNLESS the valve spring retainers hitting the underside of the rocker or there's some other issue like coming close to spring bind be careful and locate the problem source before buying and swapping parts randomly

IF YOU CAN,T SMOKE THE TIRES AT WILL,FROM A 60 MPH ROLLING START YOUR ENGINE NEEDS MORE WORK!!"!
IF YOU CAN , YOU NEED BETTER TIRES AND YOUR SUSPENSION NEEDS MORE WORK!!
