Good day to all ,
Looking to find photos of owners who installed aftermarket air conditioning on there 1958 full size Chevy with the Six cylinder 235 engine .
We are taking on the task now and need some guidance as to what works well on the 235 and what does not work . Mounting brackets ???, generator or alternator or Powermaster gen / alternator , etc .What size ac condenser and so forth . all ideas welcomed on this thanks , Joe

Thanks for reaching out to me. What I did to my Impala back in the 80's will give you some idea how to install a/c on your car for a driver not a perfect show car. I used the long GM compressor as seen, made my own brackets to mount it on the 348. Very important to have the belt run straight. The condensor and rec/drier sight glass I took from a late 60's Buick think it was, car had burnt but the a/c stuff was still good so I took it !! The rad you can see is wide but it mounted very well and the lines worked perfect to go through the rad support, and the big plus was that the drier sits where the factory 58 one would have been. Notice how the crossbar that the grill is attached to has a notch in it for the drier. There were 2 types of these crossbars, one with the notch for a/c cars and ones without the notch. But GM had tons of the notched ones so they used them up on non a/c cars too so it is common to see them on any model of 58. The lines I put through the firewall as seen and they go to the uderdash unit. I first had the compressor belt running off the crank and water pump. But twice I took out the bearing on the water pump , no fun changing this on the side of the road 200 miles from home !! So instead I mounted a seperate idler pulley as seen by passing the water pump. Never had a problem since. The stock generator works just fine. Can drive 7 hours with a/c blowing cold with R12 , radio or 8 track playing , lights on, no electrical problems at all with stock setup. Can probably hang a side of beef in the car it gets that cold !! I'm presently building a 58 Sedan Delivery and doing a very similar setup. On the 235 you will have more room to play with mounting the compressor, and probably will go with the smaller ones that are available today in kits

wow , I was hoping to see exactly what you showed me . Looks like you love the oldies just like we do here in Florida . great photos and thanks for the ideas . Funny you mentioned the GENERATOR !! I am keeping stock untill I am proven that it can not work .So much stuff is upgraded for no reason .

The stock generator works just fine , even idling with the a/c on the GEN light doesn't flicker ( and yes the voltage reg works and bulb is good !! ) . People get a kick out of the ps pump hanging on the back, " what's that thing ? "

Here's some of the setup I'm making for the 58 Delivery, not finished yet but hard parts are done. Used a hyd. Hole Punch to get through the rad support , mounted the rad , made mounting bracket for a chrome Sanden style compressor , gotta make lines yet......all takes time when making things to fit.
