Howdy, been awhile since I visited this forum. Hope everyone is doing well!

About 10 years back I replaced my stock hood hinges and springs (1957 Bel Air). About two years ago the hood would no longer stay up without an assist. I decided to replace springs using a well known vendor. The springs I received are smaller in diameter and shorter than the ones I currently have on the car. Does anyone have dimensions of the correct springs (not extended of course). Thanks!

It sounds like you received springs like I did for my 57. I had a heck of a time getting them on. I had to remove the hood and the hinges and also have a helper. I bought a package of small wedges to use between the rounds of the coils. I had to stretch the springs. I used various tools to do the stretching. I did eventually get everything put back together. Now as soon as the hood latch is undone, the hood goes up on its own.

There are several videos on youtube to help you with the install.

The springs I took off are 7.5 inches long which is the outer measurement of the hook on each end. The diameter of the spring is 1.5 inch.

Thank you George. That seems like the measurements of my current springs. The ones I received as replacement are 6 1/2" long and 1 1/4" in diameter. I suspect they're the wrong ones. I remember them being a real pain to install and did something similar to you. Thanks for the assist!

I think your new ones are about the same size as the new ones I received. Good luck with them.

George
