Finally got the head off and in the lower left corner bottom of the head gasket there is a 1/2" wharp. That took a load off my mine. Damn those cast iron heads are heavy. Just typical carbon on the piston tops and under the head. Question, the pistons are not flat top but valve indentations. Did Chevy use those type of pistons for their engines back in 1970?
Still debating if to change cam and heads. I'm sort of leaning towards that.

Low compression design, usually about 8.5, pretty common in those years.

You think a new cam and aluminum heads should beef up the torque and hp. I got to pull the oil pan off as its dented anyhow, to see if it's 4 bolt. Can't see doing all this work for a 2 bolt. Dent is right under the oil pump. Hope that's not damaged.Glad I didn't pay much for this beater. Don't care how it looks, just want the complete drive line to work and sound good. Have a good lopey rumble.
