I’m in the process of replacing my rotted out mufflers and tailpipes on my ‘55. The restorer had non stock(2” inlet/outlet)mufflers and tailpipes installed during restoration. This is a from the Power Pack car so I ordered a set of Walker mufflers from my local auto parts store but the inlets are 2” and the outlets are just over 1 5/8”. Shouldn’t the inlet and outlet diameters match? Does anyone know what the stock inlet/outlet dimensions are? Thanks!

If you also want 2 inch outlets you have to order a different part number.

I have super turbo walkers with both 2-1/2 inlet/outlet but they are a universal fit design. Super is the long case turbo model. You have the option of centered or offset inlet/outlet and the different tube diameters.

For a stock car, those are probably correct.

The theory on that it that as exhaust cools, it contracts and you therefore need less pipe area.

I am not sure that I buy that.

It is also quieter....not a plus in my book. But, I bet that was important to GM. The average person doesn't want to hear their car....or so GM might think.
