‘57 Belair Convertible:
It started with the window all the way down not going up. Since the rest of the windows worked fine, I knew it was isolated to the driver’s door. Removed the door panel and had power on the up lead going to the motor. So, I removed the motor and regulator. Hooked the regulator/motor back to the switch and it ran fine both directions. Found the up pin backed out of plug between the motor and switch.
Reinstalled the regulator/motor. Now, the motor will not stop running in the up position only and you can hear the gears grinding when the window hits the two rubber stops. The motor stops running fine in the down position. When the window is going up I can physically stop the window from going up with my hand and the motor stops.
I do understand the motor should stop running when it hits its stops and senses a high current draw. So, I hooked an external power supply that has an ammeter to the motor. At the down stop and if I physically stop the window going up mid-travel, the current draw goes from 7A to 20A and the motor stops. If I run the window to the top it hits the stops correctly but does not have the increased current draw therefore the motor continues to run and the gears grind.
The previous owner did a frame off restoration and it leaves something to be desired but the motor would stop in the up position when I bought it.
I plan to take the panel off the passenger side to see if I can see anything obvious.
The restorer did some window alignment mods actually drilling one new hole in the driver’s door to mount the regulator. The new hole(furthest one towards the back of the car and one inch lower than the original hole)does control the up travel but I mounted it in the original hole to no avail. Also tried it in the modified(new) hole. Same issue. The window is hitting the stops fine. But the motor still runs and gears grind. The passenger door’s regulator mounts are using original holes. I plan to copy everything alignment-wise to passenger door to see what that does.????
Any ideas??
