Two questions.
#1 Can the "lock ring" on the backside of the bearing be reused? I thought I read someplace that they should be replaced when replacing the bearings.
#2 Does it matter which way the bearings are installed? Right now the O-ring is on the outside and I'm wondering if I can put the O-ring to the inside. The housing has a better surface on the inside for the O-ring.

No sir,the lock ring cannot be reused once you remove it.Hence why when you purchase the axle bearings a new lock ring comes with it.The O Ring faces to the outside.The actual seal is on the inside.Clean the flange and make sure it isn't bent and DON'T forget to put in on before you install the new bearing.You press the bearing and lock ring on together.Make sure the axle tube is clean and smooth and don't try walking the axle in with the flange as you can bend them easily.Lubricate the new bearing and slip the axle in.You can use RTV in the mounting flange side.These axle bearings have been through several changes since 1955.Original 55 axle bearings stand alone as well as the axle flange plate.GM issued a TSB in early 56 for replacement of 55 axle bearings utilizing the current production axle bearings which GM used through 57 which used 1 O Ring.In 58,they were changed again and now have 2 O Rings and were used up to 64.The oil seal is part of the bearing.Original bearings were NDH.I use Timken in my shop exclusively if I can get them.

Agree with your comments and recommendations for the bearing removal and replacement. My concern is that there is no real physical barrier to the bearing working its way out laterally. The end cap/dust cover I.D. is larger than the bearing O.D. and for that reason the bearing could walk and cause damage to the tire, fender, and possibly the carrier if the axle moved far enough to disengage the splines. I am helping a friend with his '55 Wagon and we're working on a solution, hope someone else has an idea to solve this issue.
