I recently bought a '56 Belair Sport Coupe that is mostly primer gray or DP colored. I was actually kind of jazzed to learn that it was originally some color combination other than India Ivory & ___________. No disrespect intended, but almost all the '56 Belairs I see are either Red & White or Blue & White. So I thought I'd like to have something a bit different... So, when showing and/or telling family and friends the car, the inevitable question comes up - What color am I gonna paint it? When I mention in passing that the original colors are Crocus & Laurel, many have rolled their eyes, made gagging sounds, or expressed their own wishes that I not paint it that...

Now... I understand it is mine, and mine alone to decide the color, but I am curious about the strong reaction to Crocus & Laurel, so I'd like to conduct a little poll (no wagering, please)... Crocus Yellow and Laurel Green... Yes? (add one to the tally) or No? (add one to the tally)

Yes?: 1
No?: 0
Can I get that to GO? * * * '56 210 HT * * * '56 BelAir HT * * *

It was a pretty color combination then, and it is STILL a pretty color combination.

DO IT!

Hi Gotta-

How about my personal '56-only fav: Crocus yellow and onyx black? There is a local '56 convertible which is painted this way and is stunning. It is also a GM pilot car...#6!
Do these fins make my rear end look big?

YES!

I wish I hadn't sold my last one! It was a Bel Air 4 door sedan with a sun visor, fender skirts, traffic light viewer, tissue dispenser, curb feelers, and dealer installed "factory" air. Oh, I almost forgot the best part - it had a hula girl on the package tray! My wife loved it, I loved it and what other people thought didn't bother me one way or the other. When I was a kid, my uncle had a Bel Air two door sedan which was Crocus/Laurel and I even liked it then.
Also, I'll wager that even the nay-sayers will admit they like it when you are all finished.

I vote YES, or actually hell yeah! In a world where it seems everyone is painting their tri-fives red/white, turquoise/white, etc, it's a nice change to see an example of a beautiful original color combo.

YES x 1000!

My car is modified but we used the original Neptune with green pearl. Their was a crocus/black convert at a CCI show 2 years ago that took the show.

I love the original colors used in these models. Go for it.

Personal taste: NO

Our Gobstomper was crocus and laurel, repainted red and white by 2nd owner. I can't imagine making the selection of crocus yellow and laurel green in the light of day, especially with the roof and all door jambs in laurel.

Had several 57's that color combo years ago, still HOT. You hardly ever see it on cars for sale. Every month I look at adds but never see any. Laurel green and crocus yellow combo and dusk pearl I believe were introduced quite late in the year on 57's. Not sure about availability all year in 56. Only seen one green/yellow 57 2 dr htp years ago, wish I had it now.

Since this is the stock forum, and those were the original colors, I'll grudgingly vote yes. My Nomad was originally those colors but long since repainted, um, yeah, red & white. Will repaint it one day and change to something different, already have the model painted the right colors.

Hi gotta,

HOT HOT HOT!

Do it. The new bc/cc paint systems will add depth to those colors making them MORE glamous.

Oh, I hate my 55 because it is gypsy red/shoreline beige!

I vote YES. My '55's original colors are Harvest Gold and India Ivory. I labored over whether to paint it these colors or something different. I went with the Harvest Gold/India Ivory combo and glad I did. I get a lot of compliments on how nice and "refreshing" it is and not the usual red/white or blue/white or black.

I vote YES also. The Red/White and Blue/White are nice, but there are way too many of them and if painted those colors it would just be another clone in the crowd. My Nomad was originally Dusk Pearl/White and is going back that color.

Actually, the Laurel Green/Colonial Cream was dropped by the end of the '57 model year. It didn't sell as well as Laurel Green/Crocus Yellow sold in '56. So that color combo on a '57 is actually an early '57 color and is quite rare!

Yes, go with the "mustard and custard" combo. And as Ollie said, use BC/CC and it will make it stunning. I also like the black/yellow "bumblebee" combo on a 56.

I vote YES for your car, it would be nice to see something rather than the old tired out black or reds. I can't help feeling that it might hurt resale value sometime down the road.

Hi gotta56forme?....I would vote to give it it's origianl "birth colours"

But you have to do what you would be happiest with....

It could be a bit harder to sell the car later than other colour choices, but as we all become pretty attached to our cars, that may not be important. (Allot of us keep our cars for a long time)

I had a Bel Air sport sedan that was Grecian Gold and Calypso Creamm...kind of in the same colour "boat" as your car...

It looked really nice, and in the years I owned it,
I only saw one other car with that combo in my monthly "tri-five" magazine that would arrive with pics of the latest convention.

My car came from Mt. Vernon...maybe "they" were on a Washington lot together

I am pretty sure you can see a colour drawing of a '56 Bel Air sport coupe (Laurel Green and Crocus Yellow)in the little "cheapo" reproduction '56 sales brochure that is sold.

Jeez, this site is going to ruin my loving relationship with my wife...told her about this thread...she asks, "what color is laurel green and crocus yellow?"

I say,as I already have stated in an earlier post, "an ugly green and matching ugly yellow."

She says, "What do they look like, and weren't they the original colors?"

I say, "Uh huh."

She says, while looking through the '56 sales brochure, with its 56 inks, "Honey, I kind of like those colors."

I say, "Uh oh."

She says, "Let's go to the garage and look at the car again."

I say, "Uh oh."

She says, "You know, sweety buns (the woman really has no taste, look at what she married), those colors would be really different, and the car would stand out from all the rest of the cars we always see."

I say, "Uh oh."

So now, thanks to this thread, the Gobstomper will probably end up with some yellow and green combination, and it's all your fault...

I think I'll go hang out at some Studebaker site somewhere and massage my wounded pride...lezzee heeah, maybe something close to Laurel Green and Crocus Yellow, just as long as it doesn't look like government issue....Studebaker or F**d must have something.

Don't forget Paul - NoDice came about at a car show that I attended with my wife. I was at our local Toys For Tots show recently and the most common observation (good & bad ) was my choice of color. It will grow on you - pearl it! The original colors really look at home on these cars, IMO.

Love that color even more! Grecian Gold/Calypso Cream is even more rare than Laurel Green/Crocus Yellow. I saw a pic of a '56 BA 4dr hardtop a few years ago in that color-- very nice! Over the summer, I picked up a front door from a '56 BA 4dr hardtop and it had those colors on it, so I polished the remaining paint up to see what it would look like and I fell in love with it. I sold the door a few days after I picked it up. The whole thing was a mercy deal. I went to some guy's house to pick up a fender he had and while I was there I looked through his parts stash that he was selling off and he had his door that he said if it doesn't sell, it's going to the scrap yard. Couldn't let that happen!

I would like to thank you all for your interesting and entertaining responses to my question - please keep them coming. I didn't expect the Crocus & Laurel to be so warmly received by the Tri-Five community, nor, did I expect that it would open up the lines of communication between a husband and wife (Oprah would be proud...)

VABeach..., may I assume you won't be discussing CT thread/post topics with your wife in the future?
