I know this has probably been asked before, but I can't find answer specific to a 38 Chevy.
I have a Washington Titled 38 Chevy Coupe. The number (VIN) on the title is not the number on the data plate on the cowl tag, which I understand it should not be. I sold the car to someone in Oregon and since the numbers were not the same it is coming back this weekend. Are there any other locations that a VIN # might be on the car? I've read that the VIN # was actually the engine serial number. The original engine is long gone. Thanks in advance for any help.

The serial number was on the tag on the side of the cowl (not to be confused with the Fisher Body ID number which was at that location also).

Prior to 1955 most states used the engine number for registration. The 1938 engine numbers ranged from 1187822 thru 11915446 and B-1 thru B -10502.

Thanks Gene for the info.
Well, the car came back this morning and though the buyer was dissapointed, he was glad I was being honest with him . He even mentioned that I could have kept the money and blow him off, but I told him that was not the way to do business.

So, now that I have the car and title back, I found above the the cowl tag with body info, color, etc. (riveted on) there is also a plate that is screwed on above it with the numbers "6HB02 XXXXX". Is this the body number and what should be on the title. The VIN listed on the title is LCM191980 (no idea where this is from).
I also went down to our DMV this morning and they told me that I would have no problem selling the car in Washington, because we don't have to have the car inspected, but if sold to someone in Oregon, I would have to have it inspected and apply for a lost title, which then makes it sellable and registerable, but it would be a three year waiting period to get a title.
What a pain this has become. All I was doing was helping out my son who had bought the 38, 1 1/2years ago. He wanted something else so I bought it from him. Now that I found a 56 I want to get, I'm having trouble selling the 38.

The serial number is the 6HB 02 number. Have no idea what the other number is other than the letters may indicate a rebuillders code or it was added/changed when an engine from another car was installed.

Thanks Gene. Do you know if the 6HB02 correspond to a 38 Chevy Coupe? And was the tag riveted or screwed on. It is just a piece about 1.5"x3".

Never mind. I found the Chevy Historical Site and that is the code for a 1938 Chevy Master Coupe built in Oakland in February.

6 = Oakland, CA assembly plant, HB = 1938 Master Series HB, 02 = February 1938 assembly and the rest is the sequential production number. The Fisher Body plate should indicate that the body was assembled in Oakland Fisher Plant. This file on my website gives you the Fisher model code for each model which should be on the plate.

I wonder if the number on the title is a state-allocated one? Sometimes DMVs seem to take exception to the original plate being removed, because they do rust off, or are often taken off for repainting.

UODATE:I see that you found my site! The plates were riveted-on, and oftern replaced by screws.
