That message is telling you that your 4wd has a problem. Does the 4wd work? Do you have the buttons on the dash or a stick on the floor? The most common cause that I have seen is the dash switch going bad. Do the lights on the switch flash? If so that is probably it.

Not sure if your problem has been solved or not, but I just went through the same thing on my 02 Silverado - I swapped out the switches. The first thing I should have checked was the Auto Transfer Case (ATC) fuse - in the electrical center under the hood- that was blown, and it actually set the "Service 4WD" light off. But I hear the switch is a more common problem.

It is a bad solder job on the actuator switch in the dash. Remember the board in the wiper motors in the last generation? Same issue. The solder job was not good enough. You can add solder to the connections in the switch.

I have a 99 suburban that the 4 wheel drive lights work sometime and not other times. I think everything is working properly but I cant stand the lights not working. Could the bad solder joints be the problem on a 99?

Also, is it hard to remove the switch for repair?

Very easy to remove the switch. Block the wheels on the truck, tilt steering wheel all the way down, move the shifter to the 1 position, pull the dash bezel off and out, pop the couple tabs holding the switch in place, disconnect wiring harness.

try 15709327. I know this part number has been replaced with a newer one, but you should still be able to pull it up by the old one.

plan B - when you pull out your switch, the part number is actually stamped on the back - you should see two rows of numbers, use the bottom row.

Probably so. They do not seem to want to fix little issues unless they are life threatening. My brother worked on the solder wave a for a while at IBM. He is who clued me in on it.
