Im looking for some ways to maximize power and mileage in my 1998 CK2500. Its got a factory 5.7L Vortec which I believe is rated at 255hp factory. Right now if I drive it easy, she gets about 15mpg. Im looking to push my numbers closer to 300hp and 18+ MPG... any and all suggestions are welcome. Ive had some people tell me a simple ECU programmer will do the trick, others tell me intake and exhaust...

One Word.

Duramax!

Might search over in the 88-98 forums and see what they are doing for these until someone else chimes in.

Increase power, decrease mileage. You can't have both!

If you want some real power, throw a supercharger on it. It's too bad Whipple no longer offers Vortec kits; they've updated to pretty much LSx engines only for their GM offerings. There's other brands out there, though.

Reprogram the PCM. You'll get better MPG. Power is minimal. I used www.wait4meperformance.com.
Best $86 bucks spent on my Jimmy. The 4.3 can get 20 MPG at 80 MPH!!

He asked for more power, along with more MPG. Not just more MPG.

I don't know how you can push a Vortec 5.7 to 300 HP AND take it from 15 mpg to 18+ mpg; it pretty much defies the laws of nature.

Being a K series (4WD) and a 2500 isn't helping, either. Got weight and gear ratios working against you. If it's a real 2500 (8600 gvwr) and is spinning a 4L80E and 14 bolt rear, that's sucking down the MPG's, too.

I agree!

I can't say for the 350 Vortec but...I just had my 2008 5.3 tuned by Blackbear Performance and I picked up both MPG AND power. My truck is a totaly different driving experience with better MPG to boot!

It should be possible. I have a ZZ4 carbed getting 19+ at 70 MPH. 355+ HP makes for a lot of fun.

Read about PCM programming.

Okay you guys, please look again at the specifics instead of generalizations and engines/vehicles that have nothing to do with the original poster

1998 K2500, Vortec 5.7, currently getting 15MPG if he drives it "easy." Wants 300 HP and 18+ MPG. I have $10 that says it ain't gonna happen.

Well i know that it might not get you the the exact numbers your looking for, but if you invested in a good set of headers and full exhaust, cold air intake and dual electric fans it would help alot. You can get both mileage and power from those three upgrades and there are probably more that i'm unaware of.
