How do you do it?

The front crossmember is right under the nut that holds the pitman onto the steering box.

The problem is that there is a lot of slop on our 97 k1500 and it looks to be where the pitman arm connects to the relay rod. There is a ball joint at this point. As far as I know, you can't take the ball joint out of the pitman arm, you have to replace the pitman arm itself.

How do I get it off the steering box? Remove the steering box and do it on the bench?

Thanks,

Chris

Chris, I'm a bettin it takes lots of bad words to start. It's hard enough on a 2WD, I changed it on the 99 and it took over 550# of torque to get it broke loose, and used a puller on the tapered shaft (drag link) because I couldn't get it to break.

Pretty sure I've read here where guys unbolted the gearbox and turned it enough to get in there, but I bet it's a &itch.

I've changed lots of them. Just unbolt the steering box and move it into a position that allows you to get a pitman arm puller on it. It's not the easiest job to do by yourself. If you can get someone to hold the box in place it would help. Make sure you put the new arm in the same place on the shaft as the old one.

That was easy...took it to a garage to have it done..

Took about an hour and a half...the truck needed a front end alignment anyways....

It's just hanging there with the a-arm on it irritating me.

I had to stop for a couple of days to do some lawnmower repair.

It's not getting lower bushings. I'm gonna put the lower arms back in and then just replace the lower ball-joints. All the BJ's are original and rivited in. That's gonna be a PITA.

How much did you pay to get the new pitman arm put on?

I take the complete box out on a 4WD and change it on the shop table.
