I'm new to the truck forum here but have been hanging out on the 65-66 full size chevy forums here on CT.

I have a 99 (last year of the old body style, model change to new was mid year)4x4 2500 CrewCab truck with a 454 engine. Truck has been well maintained with frequent oil changes and has 145k on the odometer. When I was towing my trailer a couple of months ago, I noticed a noise coming from the engine that sounded like loud pinging. I past it off as bad gas but again, under hard acceleration, the loud pinging/knocking would happen. It has now started to happen even under mid throttle and appears to be happening with less acceleration.

I suspected sticky lifters. I just changed my oil and used CD-2 Maxx oil detergent. It's suppose to "free sticky lifters, valves and rings" etc. Engine is quieter now but the "clicking/knocking" is still present under acceleration.

Anyone here have any ideas how to isolate the problem?

If it sounded to you like pinging, you can verify it with a scan tool. Best if you have a buddy with the tool watch it while you drive and cause the engine to ping.

Could be any number of things causing it but the scan tool will go a long way in helping determine this, especially since your 99 is OBD-II and provides a lot more info than the 95-down stuff.

Most typical causes of pinging:
Spark timing too far advanced
Lean fuel mixture (low fuel pressure due to failing pump, clogged filter, injector problems, etc.)
Knock sensor not working
EGR valve problem
Excessive carbon buildup in combustion chamber
Engine overheating
Fuel octane lower than your model requires

I just went through troubleshooting a bad pinging problem with my 94 Suburban, it always pinged a little but got much worse recently. Both my knock sensor and EGR valve were bad. Between using the scan tool, vacuum tester, and a ball peen hammer (used to simulate knocking) we got it figured out.

Richard,

I read thru your post regarding your Suburban. Glad you made it ok to Houston area. I knew my engine had been updated from when your was built so I didn't want to assume I could simply follow basically the same approach or if someone with a newer model had a similar problem.

Thanks for the idea with the scan tool. Do you think I could use my Hypertech Power Promgraming?

I do think it is supposed to read codes but since I don't have any "check engine" lights illiminated, I didn't think any codes were present. I'll try it while running the engine to see if anything comes up. If not I have a friend that works at the dealer as a service writer. Theres only so much of a break he can give me so I'd like to solve this one on my own if possible. If I need a scan tool, how much do they cost and where is a fair deal on one?

BTW, I had the Superchips program installed previously so I uninstalled it back to stock to see if anything changed. No change. Also, I never really noticed an increase in performance with the upgraded program. Only firmer shifting and raised rpm limits for each gear.

I'd replace the fuel filter before you start tearing into anything else. Its all of 3-4 dollars and probably needs replaced anyway.

Where is the fuel filter located? I've never seen one under the hood. Is it easily accessible?

Inside driver's frame rail, generally in the area by the driver's door.
